Community Snapshot -- Fort Worth

Fort WorthAs the fifth largest city in Texas and the nineteenth largest city in the United States, Fort Worth's history began in a much meager manner in 1849, when a small group of U.S. Dragoons held post on the banks of the Trinity River to protect early settlers from Native American attack. Fort Worth took its name from General William Worth (a Mexican War hero) and when the natives chose to cease their opposition in 1860, Fort Worth was chosen to serve as the Tarrant County seat. With its location on the Chisholm Trail and the Texas & Pacific Railroad arrival in 1876, Fort Worth became a hot spot for the cattle industry and in the early twentieth century was known as the meat packing center of the Southwest, all contributing to Fort Worth's nickname as "Cowtown."

Today, Fort Worth takes pride in being known as the museum capital of the Southwest. The Amon Carter Museum draws people from around the world who are interested in the best of American Art. Featuring a number of masterpieces by Georgia O' Keeffe and pieces from Amon G. Carter's personal collection by Frederic Remington and Charles M. Russell, the museum also hosts a variety of world renowned exhibitions with collections by Rufino Tamayo and Charles Demuth among their over 500 exhibits since opening their doors in 1961.

The Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth is one of the oldest museums in the state and features sculptures, paintings and photographs from the post-World War II era. In addition to major traveling exhibitions such as Hiroshi Sugito and William Kentridge, the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth also houses a Permanent Collection of over 3000 works including pieces by Pablo Picasso, Jackson Pollock and Andy Warhol.

While it houses a much smaller collection than some of the other museums in Fort Worth, the Kimbell Art Museum does not lack in its style, quality and collection, and the building itself is widely regarded as an outstanding architectural achievement. Built by Louis I. Kahn in 1972, the Kimbell has hosted major traveling exhibitions such as Hatshepsut: From Queen to Pharaoh and Modigliani & The Artists of Montparnasse and counts pieces by Michelangelo, Rembrant and Matisse in their permanent collection.

Fort Worth is also home to other world renowned museums such as the Fort Worth Museum of Science and History, which houses the Omni Theater an IMAX dome, and the Texas Cowboy Hall of Fame Museum, Cowgirl Museum and Cattleman's Museum, all revealing the history upon which Fort Worth became the city it is today.

The Fort Worth Stockyards, just north of Downtown Fort Worth, allow locals and visitors alike to step back into the history of Fort Worth with the refurbished cobblestone streets still lining much of the Stockyards and the original cattle stalls still holding cattle, horses and farm animals for rodeo performances and auction. In 1917, the Fort Worth Stockyards was the largest horse and mule market in the world and while the Stockyards still hosts special breed events, Longhorn auctions and head of cattle sales in the Exchange Building, the area is much more popular today as a tourist attraction and entertainment district. As the home of Billy Bob's Texas, Cowtown Coliseum and many bars, nightclubs, dance halls and world famous steak houses, the Fort Worth Stockyards is one of Texas' most popular tourist destinations.
