Situated between Fort Worth and Dallas, Grand Prairie was earlier known as Dechman between 1863-1877 when Alexander McRae Dechman moved to the area discovering that he could trade his oxen and wagons for land in the highly coveted Dallas County. Dechman purchased 239 acres on the east side of the Trinity River and 100 acres on the west side. Today the western fork of the Trinity River still runs through the middle of the city, incorporated as Grand Prairie in 1909.
Prior to Dechman's purchase of the land, Grand Prairie was initially a mere stop on the stage coach line with an Indian Trading post. Once Dechman traded a portion of his land to the T&P Railroad in 1877, the town was ensured that the railroad would pass through and the city of Grand Prairie started to grow, today boasting a population of over 160,000.
Over the years, Grand Prairie has made its mark in the DFW Metroplex as an entertainment hub and tourist stop. Being recognized as a "Playful City USA", voted one of the "Best Places to Live" by Money Magazine 2008 and holding a "Best Parks in the USA" award from the National Recreation & Parks has also made Grand Prairie a great place to call home.
Lending to Grand Prairie's popularity as an entertainment hub are attractions such as Lone Star Park, Ripley's Believe It or Not, Nokia Theatre, Joe Pool Lake and Traders Village. Lone Star Park is known for its horse racing track which was established in 1997. This track plays host to several thoroughbred races throughout the year, as well as events such as Lone Star Million Day on Memorial Day, Lone Stars & Stripes Fireworks for the Fourth of July and many more. The 6350-seat live performance hall, Nokia Theater, is adjacent to Lone Star Park and is huge attraction for touring concerts, comedy shows, musicals and special events. At Ripley's Believe It or Not, visitors can tour 12 galleries of the weird, strange and bizarre, wind their way through 2000 sqft of an enchanted mirror maze, battle friends at Ripley's Impossible Laser Race and also visit Louis Tussuad's Palace of Wax viewing over 200 life-like wax figures. Joe Pool Lake is a 7500 acre lake that features a full service marina, camping, fishing and picnicking and is great for any type of water sports. Traders Village, the largest flea market in Texas, is also a major attraction in Grand Prairie, featuring over 3500 vendors open for business every Saturday and Sunday year-round.
