As the skin condition worsens it will come away from the body in sheets, often to such a serious extent that the patient requires treatment from a hospital’s burn unit. The risk of an infection increases the likelihood of a fatality, as does the risk of the lesions spreading to the patient’s lungs.
Other symptoms associated with SJS caused by Dilantin include liver damage, hallucinations, irregular heatbeat, confusion, constipation, fatigue, slurred speech, agitation, anemia, dizziness, low thyroid function, decreased blood pressure, increased blood sugar, joint pain, frequent bone fractures, birth defects, discolored urine and/or stools, painful erections, trouble breathing, stomach pain, weight loss and unusual bleeding.
