Located in Tarrant County, Watauga is a large suburb of Fort Worth. More than 20,000 people live in Watauga, even though the city only covers four square miles.
Watauga's roots trace back to the 1840s when settlers began homesteading there. The city got its interesting name from the Cherokee nation. "Watauga" means "village of many springs" in Cherokee.
At first the settlement was made up of mainly large farms and ranches until the Texas and Pacific Railway came through in 1881. Population dropped to just 65 people in the 1930s and 40s after the railway closed. But then in the 1960s, the population soared again due to employment at large defense plants in the area.
Watauga is still building a legacy of abundance and prosperity through aggressive economic growth, low crime rates, highly rated schools, affordable housing and a small town atmosphere. These factors, along with easy access to shopping, entertainment, recreation, airports and key business districts in the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex, make Watauga an attractive alternative for families and businesses alike.
