Shortly after this, homesteaders began to settle areas near the Trinity River. This area, however, had belonged to several Native American tribes long before the settlers arrived. Settlers began to fear for their safety and thus a small fort, Fort Worth, was built.
Although most of the villages in the vicinity of Fort Worth belonged to Native Americans, there was one non-Indian settlement and it was known as White Settlement, the name it still bares today. White Settlement took off as a prosperous farming community as more and more settlers decided to build homes there. During the 1940s, the Consolidated Aircraft Corporation employed many people from White Settlement, and the city's population soared into 10,000 residents.
Today, White Settlement is home to about 15,000 people and covers five square miles. Its schools are represented by the White Settlement Independent School District and have been recognized for academic excellence for more than eight consecutive years.
