Texas Gun Laws | Texas Injury Attorney | Texas Injury Law Firm

Lawmakers in 2009 made some changes in laws regarding guns that went into effect on September 1.

Many Texans sure appreciate their gun rights, and several new laws protect or enhancing these rights.

HB 2730 prevents defaulting on student loans from disqualifying a person from getting a concealed handgun license.  It also states that a CHL cannot be suspended for refusing to display the license to a peace officer on demand, and removes all penalties for failure to display.  The law does, however, require a judge to immediately suspend a CHL if an emergency protective order is issued against the licensee.

As the law stands, it is illegal for a CHL holder to bring a gun into a restaurant or other establishment that makes at least 51% of its income from the sale of alcoholic beverages.  Until now, there was no recourse against the Class A Misdemeanor charge this carried.  However, HB 2664 provides a defense to prosecution if the business owner does not have a sign indicating 51% or more of its income is from alcohol.
