Texas ranks among the ten states that have done the least to prevent alcohol-related traffic fatalities, the National Transportation Safety Board said today. The federal agency, which monitors transportation accidents, released their yearly "Most Wanted List" of recommended safety measures for the road. Among their priorities for state government action is the elimination of "hard core" drunk driving – drivers with a blood alcohol concentration of 0.15 percent or greater or repeat offenders within a 10-year period.
NTSB member Mark Rosekind said these drivers account for more than 70 percent of alcohol-related fatalities. The board has specified 11 actions states can adopt to reduce these accidents; Texas has only implemented four of the recommendations, including special DWI courts. Board staffers said implementing sobriety checkpoints should be a priority for Texas, which is one of 12 states that do not use them. Some studies have shown can reduce deaths by as much as 20 percent.
The number of deaths associated with drunk driving is far too high, completely unacceptable, and should not be tolerated. In my opinion I don’t think there is anything Texas can do to fully ensure that not one single person will drink and drive. It blows my mind that people plan to go out and drink, but do not make plans to get home safely. Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) is very good at attempting to eliminate drunk driving. Alcohol-related fatalities have decreased 40 percent since MADD started in 1980. The continuous efforts of awareness, MADD, and the NTSB will keep the drunk driving numbers down.
