Get On Your Bike

Posted on May 19, 2011

If you're stuck in traffic 5 days a week, you're probably not aware that tomorrow is National Bike to Work Day. It's easy to miss in the DFW metroplex, since the area was designed with motorcars in mind - not cyclists. However, several initiatives by individual cities are poised to improve the local bike life; such as the new hike and bike trails proposed in both Fort Worth and Arlington. As a Tarrant County personal injury attorney, I know that cyclists involved in collisions often suffer severe injuries - but if better and safer cycle routes are introduced and more people switch to pedal power then that means less cars and trucks on the roads, which it turn should make the area much safer for cyclists.

The benefits of cycling rather than driving are obvious - both to one's individual health and to the environment. Fort Worth is actually considering investing between $500,000 to $800,000 in a new bike share program which will make cycling a more attractive and convenient option for people who live and work in Fort Worth. The concept is similar to programs across Europe and in other US cities such as Denver, CO, Boston, MA and San Antonio, TX. For a small fee, residents could rent a public bike whenever they want, and return it to any other bike rack in the city once they're done with it. I think it sounds like a great idea. Even if you have to make a commute into the city each day, it's a welcome alternative to get about - and get some exercise - at lunch.

If you're planning on attending the Colonial Invitational Golf Tournament in Fort Worth this weekend, remember that the Colonial Country Club is offering free parking for bicycles thanks to a partnership with Streams and Valleys. Given the convenient access to and from the golf course thanks to the Trinity Trail, it's a cheap and easy way to enjoy the event.
