Legal Update: The Trial of Michael Jackson’s Personal Doctor

Posted on Sep 30, 2011

The biggest legal news in America this week is the Los Angeles trial of Michael Jackson's personal doctor, Dr. Conrad Murray, who stands accused of involuntary manslaughter in the case of the Price of Pop's death in 2009. Involuntary manslaughter means that Dr. Murray is alleged to be guilty of causing the singer's death, but without "malice afterthought," meaning he did not intend to kill him. If convicted, Dr. Conrad Robert Murray will face a prison sentence of up to 48 months under California law.

Already, the jury have heard testimony from one of Michael Jackson's security guards, Alberto Alvarez who told the court that Murray ordered him to hide vials and a saline bag before paramedics arrived at the Neverland Ranch. The doctor apparently explained the deceased singer's condition to the bodyguard by saying that he had "a bad reaction." Alvarez testified that it was only after the drugs had been gathered and concealed did Murray instruct him to call 911. The prosecution is arguing that Murray negligently administered Propofol, a surgical anesthetic also known as milk of magnesia, to Jackson as a sleep aid and that the fatal overdose caused Michael Jackson's death.

Today will be day four of the trial. The court will hear testimony from the paramedics who responded to the emergency call. They are expected to provide key evidence in the trial as veteran paramedic Richard Senneff already detailed the chaos he witnessed at an earlier hearing for the case. Senneff has accused Murray of failing to provide essential CPR and that Michael Jackson had clearly already been dead for at least 20 minutes before they arrived at the scene. The trial is ongoing.
