News From the Legal World: Reebok Forced to Pay $25 Million Because of Toning Shoe Claims

Posted on Sep 29, 2011

EasyToneYou know the saying "If it's too good to be true it probably is"? Well, unfortunately for all of us that want more toned and shapely legs, Reebok's toning shoes will not get us there. Despite Reebok's claims that the shoes would measurably strengthen the legs and butts of people who wear them, the Federal Trade Commission is calling their bluff. In fact, Reebok is going to have to pay $25 million to customers to settle charges by the FTC for deceptive advertising.

Although Reebok claimed that EasyTone walking shoes, RunTone running shoes and EasyTone flip flops had been proven to add 28 percent more strength and tone in buttock muscles and 11 percent more strength in hamstring muscles than regular shoes, the FTC said the shoe company could not support these claims with evidence.    Under the settlement, Reebok is banned from making claims the shoes add any strength unless they are backed by scientific evidence.

If you want a refund for your "toning" shoes, you need to contact the FTC directly or go through a court-approved class-action lawsuit.  Maybe now we'll see less of these weird shoes walking around - one can only hope!
