Reaction To The Casey Anthony Verdict

Posted on Jul 06, 2011

Armchair speculators were quick to react yesterday following the jury's verdict in the trial of Casey Anthony, who stood accused of murdering her two-year-old daughter, Caylee. Soon after the jury announced their unanimous decision that Casey was not guilty of the charges of first degree murder or manslaughter, the TV talking heads started ranting and social media sites lit up as viewers debated the jury's findings. Everyone, it seems, has an opinion.

As a Dallas-Fort Worth lawyer, my thoughts are that the only people with access to all the relevant evidence - the jury - have decided.  People are expressing anger and confusion at the trial's outcome, but it is an emotional reaction. This is natural. It was a very emotional trial, and a very sad story. But the 12 men and women whose job it was to weigh the evidence and reach a conclusion have made their decision. They felt they could not convict Casey Anthony beyond a reasonable doubt. That is how our justice system operates. Like it or not, it's the best justice system in the world.

My disappointment is with the media hacks like Nancy Grace who are exploiting the situation for their own gain by stirring up feelings of anger in a desperate bid for ratings. I agree with Casey Anthony's attorneys, Jose Baez and Cheney Mason, who spoke out against these "incompetent talking heads" as conducting a "media assassination" filled with "bias and prejudice." Unfortunately, that seems to always be the case with today's news media. Truly fair and balanced TV news is a rarity today.

Whatever your own thoughts and emotions are on the trial of Casey Anthony, the jury has made their decision. She was tried according to the law of the land and she was found not guilty by a jury of her peers.
