Students At Southwest Christian School Vow To Not Text And Drive
Posted on Apr 15, 2011
Distracted driving is one of the main causes of auto accidents. As a Tarrant County personal injury lawyer, this is something which is close to my heart so it is good to see it getting attention both on the state level as Texas legislators prepare House Bill 243 and on a local level as the City of Arlington readies to completely ban all motorists from using handheld cellphones while driving their cars. Even with all this attention, however, people still continue to text, eat and apply their makeup while behind the wheel and as a result cause some terrible traffic wrecks. I believe that stricter regulations can help reduce the number of crashes and make our roadways safer for everyone, but just as important is getting individuals to make the common sense decision to turn their cellphone off when they get in the driver's seat.
For the past few years I have visited high schools around the DFW area to educate students on the dangers of distracted driving, and to ask them to sign a pledge to promise not to text and drive. Everyone who signs the pledge gets an orange bracelet to help spread the word and to remind the wearer of the promise they've made. I would like to thank Joey Richards, Susan Carr and all the students at Southwest Christian School in Fort Worth who took part in their recent pledge drive. Over 400 teenagers vowed to abstain from texting while driving which is a tremendous success.
To sign the pledge yourself, please visit our Teens Against Distracted Driving website. If your school or organization would like to participate and arrange your own pledge drive, please call us at 800-354-6275.
