A tanker truck carrying highly flammable jet fuel is on fire near Alliance Airport in Roanoke this afternoon. As of yet there is no official word as to the cause of the accident, but given that aviation fuel burns at temperatures in excess of 500°F this is being treated as a serious incident. Emergency responders initially closed eastbound 114 near 377 while firefighters work to extinguish the blaze, but now reports are coming in that the road has been closed in both directions while the situation is resolved.
As a Fort Worth personal injury lawyer with 20 years' experience dealing with 18 wheeler wrecks, I know that semis transporting hazardous material pose a big risk to other road users. While it is currently unclear whether any other vehicles were involved in a collision with the tanker, I am certainly very concerned for the well-being of the truck driver who is at risk of suffering not only burns from the fire, but also damage to his lungs given his proximity to the burning chemicals.
I hope that everyone involved in this tragic accident is okay and that there are no serious injuries. Most likely, there will be more concrete details available in the coming hours.
