Texas Named Worst State for Drunk Driving Deaths

Posted on Nov 16, 2011

The anti-drunk driving organization MADD has released a new report which details the extent of alcohol-related auto accidents across America. Most shocking of all is the financial cost of such booze-fueled crashes. In 2009 alone, drunk driving wrecks cost $132 billion. Given the dire state of the US economy right now, this money would have been far better spent elsewhere. Instead, it's $132 billion in tax dollars which has been wasted thanks to idiots who decided to get behind the wheel after drinking.

As a Dallas-Fort Worth personal injury lawyer, I am particularly disappointed to learn that Texas retains its lead in the number of drunk driving fatalities year after year. MADD suggest that this could in part be due to the state's lack of sobriety checkpoints and the installation of ignition interlock systems on first time offenders' cars, but I know that with the number of dry cities throughout the DFW region, this actually poses its own problems as motorists are forced to travel outside of their local area to drink and then make the inexcusable decision to try to drive home.

I've been helping car crash victims throughout North Texas since 1991. In that time, I've seen firsthand the complete and utter devastation that one intoxicated driver can cause. Whenever someone gets behind the wheel of a car or truck after drinking, they not only put their lives at risk, but also the lives of their passengers and any other motorists unfortunate enough to be sharing the road with them. There is never any excuse for drink-driving. Unfortunately, it remains a huge problem in DFW and evidently throughout Texas.

As we enter the holiday season, from Thanksgiving through to Christmas and the New Year, we find ourselves in the time of year where drunk driving accidents rise sharply. It is nearly impossible to protect yourself from a drunk driver, but there is something you can do to protect yourself and your family and friends. Don't drink and drive. Don't allow someone who has been drinking to get behind the wheel. Organize a designated driver before you go out, or get a taxi home.
