Three people were injured in a Mesquite ISD school bus accident this morning. Police report that the bus, which was travelling on I-635, was carrying one special education student (a boy) and an aide in addition to the driver at the time of the wreck. It is believed that another vehicle clipped the school bus causing it to roll over several times.
The boy, aide and driver were all sent to hospital to be treated for what are understood to be minor injuries. According a Mesquite Independent School District spokesperson, none of the injuries were serious and all three were alert and coherent following the crash.
It is unclear whether the school bus was equipped with seat belts or not. In Texas, all school buses purchased after September 1st 2009 have been required to be fitted with safety belts for all passengers, but there are still many older buses being used in ISDs throughout the Dallas-Fort Worth region which are not equipped with safety restraints fitted as standard.
