Traffic Fatalities at the Lowest Level Since 1949

Posted on Apr 05, 2011

Traffic Fatalities at a LowThe U.S. Department of Transportation said the number of traffic fatalities fell to the lowest level since 1949, falling 3 percent in 2010. The initial figures show that there were 32,788 killed in traffic accidents last year compared to the 33,808 killed the previous year.

The DOT attributes the falling traffic fatalities to better accident prevention technology in automobiles and public safety programs that target distracted driving and drunk driving. Although the DOT said it's hard to pinpoint the exact reason traffic fatalities were lower, officials said increased legislation against cell phone use
while driving and more stipulations against beginner drivers may have played a role.

Whatever the reason, these are numbers North Texas drivers should be happy about.
