Twenty-One Bridges in Tarrant County are Considered “Structurally Deficient”

Posted on Jan 17, 2012

The Ft. Worth Star Telegram today published an investigative report into the state of bridge structures in and around the DFW metroplex. 29 of Tarrant County’s 2,047 bridges scored less than 50 out of 100 in their most recent inspections, including some major sections of roadways. As a Fort Worth personal injury lawyer, the safety of our local bridges is certainly a big concern to me. After all, who can forget the devastation resulting from the collapse of the Mississippi River bridge in Minneapolis in August 2007?

Less than a mile away from the Anderson Law Firm, the West Seventh Street bridge in Fort Worth apparently scored 38.8 out of 100 in its most inspection in March 2010, yet more than 12,000 vehicles cross it every day. The structure is currently 99 years old and is scheduled to be demolished in 2013. However, state officials reportedly say that if there was a genuine cause for concern regarding its current safety, they would not hesitate in shutting the bridge immediately. Just last year, a section of I-30 between Fort Worth and Arlington was shut down for two months to repair damaged caused by a drunk driver. In 2009, West Lancaster Avenue Bridge over the Trinity River was closed for several months for emergency repairs to take place.

Dangerous road conditions should not simply be shrugged off, as a board certified auto accident lawyer, I have handled many cases where defective roadway construction or other structural hazards were the cause of the bodily injuries or wrongful deaths experienced by my clients. It is of paramount important that the bridges, ramps and flyovers we all drive on every day are structurally safe. Unfortunately, according to the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) there are currently 21 bridges in Tarrant County which are considered structurally unsound. A further eight are considered functionally obsolete due to either geometrical or load-carrying capacity. However, compared to the rest of the nation, Texas overall actually fares very well. According to Transportation for America, Texas has just 1,551 structurally unsound bridges out of a total of 51,277 structures, which is good enough for third best in safety.

Of course, in the event of bridge collapse the cause of your crash is going to be obvious. However, there are plenty of other reasons why the design or condition of a roadway might not be so apparent. Common unsafe road conditions include inadequate lighting, improper or obscured traffic signage, missing median barriers and improper warnings in construction zones. If you or a loved one has been injured in an auto wreck which you believe to be the result of unsafe road conditions, call the Anderson Law Firm for a no fee, no obligation consultation.
