The age group with the most DUI fatalities in texas, as both drivers and passengers, are 20-21 year-olds. There are a number of reasons that this young age range is pinned with such a high number of deaths.
On reason is that 20-21 year-olds include many kids at college who are suddenly able to legally drink, or illegally drinking anyway. This means they don’t understand their own limits, especially when it comes to getting behind the wheel.
This is also the age where being out late is completely normal and common, which puts them more at risk for being around other people on the roads who may be drunk driving. College campuses, especially many in Texas, are located in huge cities with large highway systems. This may also have a lot to do with the large number of fatalities for this age group.
Although this age range had by far the most fatalities, there were also various concentrations of higher fatalities from ages 30-60. This just goes to show that anyone frequently on the roads can be a victim of drunk driving.
As parents, it’s important to teach our children about not only making good decisions after drinking, but also to not put themselves in bad situations. This means not driving at late hours unless it is absolutely necessary, and to stay away from drivers on the road if they are swerving or driving erratically.
