DeAndre Tatum, 18, has died of injuries sustained two weeks ago when an apparent drunken driver plowed through a South by Southwest crowd on a downtown Austin street. He is the fourth person hit who has died, and 21 others are still recovering from minor to major injuries. Rashad Charjuan Owens, 21, had a blood content level of .114 after he drove his car into a huge group of people.

Owens remains in the Travis County Jail with bail set at $3 million for the crime. Austin police have said they will pursue charges of capital murder and aggravated assault with a motor vehicle, but Travis County prosecutors have not taken the case to a grand jury.

Drunk driving is a serious act that can have deadly implications. Owens’ drunk driving has killed four people, and there is a number of people who may have physical or emotional scarring for the rest of their lives.

The family of this young man had their loved one taken away too early, all because of a man who drunk drove- something that is 100 percent preventable. It’s hard to say what will happen next in this situation, but I can only assume that the rising death count will push the prosecutors to take the case to a grand jury. Too many lives have been taken or forever changed for anything else to occur.
