A teenager was hit by a vehicle Wednesday afternoon in the intersection of East Lancaster Avenue and Riverside Drive. The teen, a 16-year-old male from Watauga, was skateboarding at the time of the accident. The accident occurred when the teen was skateboarding downhill near Lancaster Avenue, jumped off his skateboard before entering the intersection, and was carried to the street by his momentum. When the teen landed on the street, he was hit by an oncoming vehicle.

Witnesses noted how vehicles stopped at the scene and began giving the teen CPR. Whether or not the teen was wearing a helmet at the time of the accident is not clear.

According to the authorities, the teen’s death was caused by multiple blunt force injuries. After the accident, the teen was rushed to JPS Hospital, where he was declared dead around 7:30 p.m. The driver was not charged with a crime, according to police. However, there is much more to the story. The teen, according to officials, was homeless. He had been staying at a nearby Salvation Army center, which was just across the street from where the accident occurred.

Pedestrian Safety is Very Important

It is very important for pedestrians and drivers to both make safe decisions in order to avoid being involved in an unwanted accident. For pedestrians, the responsibility on staying on the sidewalk and avoiding being on the road is key in staying safe. Risks like being hit by a vehicle, being run over, or being injured can be drastically reduced. On the other hand, walking on the road (especially when cars are present), playing on the road, or staying on the road can lead to disastrous consequences.

On the driver’s side, it it’s important to stay alert for pedestrians that happen to be on the road. Similarly, driving in a safe and responsible way is an important tool in not only keeping pedestrians safe, but other drivers and passengers safe as well. This includes not drinking and driving, not texting, and keeping one’s concentration on the thing that matters in the moment: driving.

How Could This Type of Accident Be Avoided?

This is not the only pedestrian accident that has occurred. Sadly, there are drivers that make irresponsible decisions that lead to hitting pedestrians, and there are pedestrians that act in reckless behaviors that contribute to an accident occurring. Also, it is important for parents to teach and show their children ways that they can avoid getting into an accident. Several ways include:

  • Not playing in areas where vehicles are present
  • Wearing protective gear such as helmets
  • Being alert at all times

These things can help children avoid being hit by a vehicle. Having an injured child is something that no parent wants to go through. For this reason, the responsibility for safety is something that parents must meet.
