Honda, Nissan and Mazda have reported that they will recall nearly 3 million vehicles worldwide due to possibly faulty airbags. This recall is right on the heels of General Motors’ massive recall due to faulty ignition switches. All of the vehicles use airbags supplied by Takata Corp., and could contain defective inflator propellants, according to Automotive News.
Honda’s recall, which includes about 1 million vehicles in North America, covers Civics, CR-Vs, Odysseys and Elements built between 2000 and 2002. Likewise, Mazda will recall about 15,000 older vehicles in North America, including the RX-8 and first-generation models of the Mazda6. Nissan’s will recall about 228,000 vehicles in North America, including the Infiniti FX35, Pathfinder and Cube.
Two deaths have been linked to faulty airbags in Hondas, both in the U.S.in 2009, Automotive News said. Nissan and Mazda said they have received no reports of injuries. Takata informed the automakers earlier this month that faulty inflators may have gone undetected during the manufacturing of the bags because of poor record keeping.
At this rate, every vehicle on the road will be recalled by the end of this year! While it’s great that these three companies are being proactive with possible defects, it’s still scary from the perspective of the consumer. These recalls are simply raising the awareness of the growing unreliability of cars.
Car defects may be reliable for more injuries and deaths than we may ever know, especially defects dealing with airbags. Airbags have the sole purpose of protecting drivers in the event of a crash, and without it we are put in serious danger.
