COLLEYVILLE – Last Friday, a 16-year-old boy was hit by a car while crossing the road across from Heritage High School at around 7:00 p.m. He was taken directly to Parkland Hospital, and there is yet no word on his condition.
Currently, an investigation is underway to determine the cause of the accident. No official repot has been released regarding the condition of the driver.
Unfortunately, determining fault for pedestrian-on-car accidents in Texas isn’t always straightforward. Pedestrians are expected to cross at crosswalks and obey traffic lights, but they are also always given the right-of-way. If a pedestrian is crossing illegally, drivers still have a duty to pay attention to the road. This is particularly true around schools.
Pedestrian fatality statistics have stayed relatively steady over the past 15 years – approximately 5,000 pedestrians are killed and 70,000 are injured nationwide in traffic accidents annually. Many of these accidents occur even when the pedestrian has the right-of-way.
