As a Grapevine personal injury lawyer I have been assisting injured cyclists and pedestrians from around Tarrant County and throughout the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex since 1991. Injuries sustained by bicycle riders, walkers and joggers who are unfortunate enough to be injured in a traffic wreck are usually extremely serious. Unlike passengers in a car or truck, pedestrians have zero protection. The human body is simply not designed to sustain the blunt force trauma impact that occurs during a motor vehicle collision, which is why the fatality rate of crashes involving pedestrian and bicycle are so high.
In 2009 (the most recent data available), 630 cyclists were killed in traffic accidents, and a further 51,000 were injured.
This is why it is so important for cyclists to wear helmets when out riding their bikes in and around Grapevine. Although the protection of a helmet still cannot compare to an automobile's seat belts and air bags, the protection a government approved bicycle helmet gives can significantly reduce the danger of life-threatening injuries such as traumatic brain injury or skull fractures.
When purchasing a bicycle helmet either for yourself or your child, it is recommended that you make sure you are purchasing one that meets the requirements of the US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). It is also important that you aware of the need to regularly replace bicycle helmets in order to maintain the highest level of safety as possible.
You should replace your helmet if:
- You are in a bicycle accident because helmets are only designed to protect your head from an impact a single time. If your helmet has done its job once, then it's time to buy a new one
- You notice a crack on your helmet - bear in mind that helmets can be damaged not only from crashes, but also if something falls on them while in storage or if they are accidentally dropped on to a hard surface
- Your helmet is more than five years old - like any safety product, the quality of a good helmet can deteriorate over time so plan on replacing your helmet at least once every five years
- Your helmet does not meet the most current safety standards - you should be able to find your helmet on the manufacture's website and verify that it complies with the CPSC's recommendations
