Choose Wisely: The Daycare Dilemma

Daycares should be a safe place for children, but this is not always the case. Some of the most common cases we’ve handled include children getting their fingers trapped in closing doors, injuries caused by inadequate supervision, or intentional abuse by a member of staff.

Of course, even though accidents can happen, parents can minimize the risks by thoroughly investigating the various options available to them before choosing a daycare center.

Look at Reviews

Ideally, a personal recommendation by another parent is great, but failing that, online reviews such as those available on Google make it easy to see what other parents say about local daycares. You should also search and to find nearby daycare centers that have earned accreditation.

Visit the Daycare

Take advantage if the daycare offers tours to parents of potential new students. Just the general upkeep of the building and other facilities speaks volumes about the overall quality of the daycare. It doesn’t have to be perfect, but should be generally neat and uncluttered. Also check out the playground to make sure the equipment is age-appropriate and in an enclosed area with no access to a street or parking lot.

Talk to the Staff

If you know which class your child will be in, try to get to know the teacher a little bit to make sure that you are comfortable with them. After all, they’re going to be a huge part of your child’s day-to-day life. Try to find out how much experience the staff has. Also inquire about the ratio of teachers to children, as many daycare accidents occur due to lack of supervision at understaffed daycares.

Making an informed decision can help you feel more confident when dropping off your kids for the first time. We hope these tips will help your family find a safe and welcoming daycare that you’ll be happy with.
